In a book titled, The Machine in the Garden, Leo Marx wrote about how nostalgic
longings for both rustic simplicity and untamed nature have historically
been pervasive in American culture. IN THE GARDEN explored this idea by appropriating
stereotypically wild and civilized images into an enigmatic tableau.
