SPEAKING IN TONGUES, Installation, mixed media, 40’ x 27’ x 10’, Rogue Gallery, Medford, OR 1993

SPEAKING IN TONGUES references the way in which our nostalgic longings for nature are present in mass-produced domestic objects, such as cookie cutters and baking molds. In the installation, nature is metaphorically ‘served up’ for consumption, through childhood icons of the pastoral landscape:  star, moon, horse, dog, chicken and rabbit. The mixer, endlessly churning, spins out our longings for innocence, while the blackened baking pans and the tarred wall of wax cookie cutter candles suggest the melting and burning of desire itself.
